Gunpowder Falls Tailwater in Monkton, MD

Gunpowder Falls is a fantastic fishery with a large variety of bug life and structure making for great trout habitat.  The scenery surrounding the River below the Dam feels like you have been transported to a mountain stream far away from the noise and pollution of big city life.  97% of the trout in Gunpowder Falls are Brown Trout.  The other 3% are Rainbow and Brook trout.  Most Rainbow trout are found within 1.2 miles downstream of the Dam.  Gunpowder Falls features an abundance of fishing structure, cut banks, large boulders followed by deep pools and riffles and long runs to fish.  Depending on the location you fish there are several opportunities to dissect different types of water.

Fly Fishing Classes

Please inquire about rates and availability.  We have a fly-fishing class over 2 days (4 hours of total time) that focuses on:

  1. Leaders, knots and the basic setup to get you prepared to get out on the water.

  2. Basic Fly Casting that you will use on 95% of trout streams.

  3. Catching a fish and how to handle/land once it is hooked.  Our class is held on a freshwater pond where you have a great chance to catch a bluegill, bass, crappie or pickerel.
